Gori is the administrative centre of the region.
Shida Kartli consists of 6 administrative districts: Gori, Kaspi, Kareli, Khashuri, Tskhinvali, Java.
There are 372 settlements in that part of the region that is controlled by the central government, of which:
4 cities - Gori, Kaspi, Kareli and Khashuri;
2 towns - Surami and Agara;
366 villages.
Southern districts of the Shida Kartli region are situated along the main motor and railway arteries of the country. The industrial activity of the region is mainly concentrated in Kareli, Gori and Kaspi districts. The data on the industrial activity of the northern mountainous area of the region
(South Ossetia) is not available but it must not be very significant. The total industrial output of the region in 2004 comprised 8 percent of Georgia's entire industrial production.
The main agricultural activity of the region is fruit and vegetable growing, while in northern zones - animal farming. Besides, Shida Kartli is suitable for beet growing.
Households are mainly engaged in growing wheat (11,000 ha; 14,000 tons); fruit (11,000 ha; 34,000 tons) and maize (10,000 ha; 21,000 tons).
